Flexible Packaging Conversion Process
The transformation of raw materials into the finished packaging you see on store shelves is a complex yet fascinating journey. Let’s explore the key stages involved in bringing your packaging vision to life.
Printing
The journey of flexible packaging begins with printing. Techniques like flexography, rotogravure, or digital printing bring vibrant designs and critical information to life on the film. This step can be skipped for clear packaging applications.
Lamination
It is a crucial step that bonds multiple layers of film together. This process enhances barrier properties, improves strength and puncture resistance, and even extends shelf life. Common techniques include adhesive lamination and extrusion lamination. Regardless of printed or clear film, lamination strengthens the final product. For pre-made pouch manufacturers machines to form pouches directly, lamination might be the final step before conversion. However, manufacturers utilizing vertical form fill seal (VFFS) proceed to the slitting stage.
Slitting
Once printed or laminated (or both), the wide film is precisely slit into narrower reels according to the desired pouch sizes. This slitting process is followed by rewinding the material onto cores for easier handling in the next stage.
